Lovely Lime Cupcakes!

I experimented with making lime cupcakes the other day for my dad's sablefish BBQ Celebrate Life: Vancouver Edition party. I really didn't measure the amount of lime zest or juice, I just used up all the limes I had bought recently! The result was a very delightful lime cake, the lime really shone through! I paired it with vanilla creamcheese frosting (I haven't found one cupcake that doesn't work with this frosting thusfar!), dipped it in toasted coconut and topped it with a fresh raspberry.

Party guests gave it the thumbs up!

Get On The CatBus (Cake!)

My cute new little nephew Tanner turned 1 month old! We Chinese like to celebrate as much as we possibly can so we had a special "Tanner Is 1 Month Old" dinner for him! Menu items included Gai Jow (gin infused super ginger spicey chicken broth soup with fungus), which is meant to strengthen the mom with superpowers, and dyed red egg. Red is a thumbs-up ho-ho-lucky colour for Chinese folks. And for dessert... CATBUS CAKE! My sis Leanne is pretty much Totoro-crazy so it just seemed right to make her new little baby a Catbus cake, inspired by this awesome one!

To really Asian-it-up, I made it using a matcha green tea cake, vanilla creamcheese frosting and anko red bean filling! I am REALLY into this combo lately, as you can see!

I love my nephews and niece! They make me so happy.

Cookie Monster The Maniac

Piping away Cookie Monster's furry face and sides.

COOKIES!

Happy Birthday Kingston!

Fondant eyeball!

Gimme gimme gimme a cookie after midnight

Fondant cookie with real chocolate chips.

Big old Cookie Monster Face cake by Coco Cake! I made this for baby Kingston's 1st birthday party, as ordered by his mama Theda. Matching mini cupcakes with vanilla buttercream in blue liners and rainbow sprinkles were also ordered but I forgot to snap their pictures! Cookie Monster is a 9 inch vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream tinted blue.

Sometimes I feel like I'm a Cookie Monster myself. Cookies are just so darn delicious, especially homemade ones minutes out of the oven... crisp on the bottom from butter and sugar, warm and dark chocolate chips still melty... sweet with a little bit of salt... Heaven.

Moustachio & Friends: Moustache Cupcakes

Moustachio-themed moustache cupcakes to announce the gender of Kellie's upcoming baby! :)

I couldn't resist making this moustache into a face.

Ain't no party like a moustache party!

Wait a second... this guy looks familiar! (Gerry Sung??)

Sweet and pregnant Kellie ordered moustache themed Coco Cake cupcakes for a little party, to help along the announcement that she will be having a boy, her third boy! When Kellie's husband came to pick up the cupcakes with her other two little adorable sons, he gave me an apron that Kellie sewed for me. So nice and so sweet! Thanks so much Kellie, and all the best nearer to the end of this month! ;)

Crazy Cake For My Pal Raf

Raffers a.k.a. Shogodog (er, real name Rafael) is the best buddy a girl could have. Raffers and I met in 2003 when I did a media technician internship at VIVO (a multi-media learning facility for nerds here in Vancouver). Raf was the head technician, I was the lowly intern with a handful of patchcords and nowhere to put them. Shortly after my internship, Raf and I spent a whole day together lacing together a DVD for a music video event... and I am pretty sure it was then when I realized this quiet, stylish Japanese guy had practically the exact same sense of humour as me. Animals in human clothing? Check.

Fast forward to 2010: Raf and I have collaborated on many art projects together in our conceptual art group Guimauves, and had lots of great times as buddies eating our way through Vancouver and beyond.

For his birthday, we threw a BBQ and an outdoor movie screening on our back fence! I made a triple layer matcha green tea cake with anko red bean filling, and vanilla creamcheese frosting piped in a hairy canary fashion, with blackberries making up some sort of face... a very Japanesey cake for my best Japanese Canadian friend Raffers!

Er, I also got him a custom printed GARFIELD poster. We're also Garfield twins.

Happy Birthday Shogodog!! :)

Coco Cake Round-Up!

Lorna ordered dark chocolate cupcakes with chocolate buttercream
for her boyfriend Curtis' birthday...

She also requested one to look like Elvis, and the other to look like a guitar... I chose Fat 1970s Elvis as my inspiration... yellow tinted shades and silver dragee sequin-work... Fat Elvis, or party animal Chinese relative??

My old friend Sabina from HIGH SCHOOL (who now lives in the UK) ordered Toopy & Binoo cupcakes for her nephew's birthday... ! Long distance order! :)

I didn't know these little dudes before this order. I like Toopy the rat's nutty look, and "casual times" Binoo..

These cupcakes remind me of a synchronized swimmer's floral-look cap from the 1950s...

I found that vintage plate at a thrift store a few years ago... I love the robin's egg blue...

Burger Time! Such an awesome game of the 1980s! Nicole and her co-workers ordered this burger cake for their boss Jeff at Drive Organics, here in Vancouver. Must be a pretty rad boss to garner a burger cake!!

Note the bacon. This bacon has a lot of fat on it.

More to come in Coco Cake Land, coming soon!

Sharon & Cam: 10 Years 'N Counting!

Yay!! Our beautiful friends Sharon and Cam celebrated their 10 year wedding anniversary at Cambrian Hall here in Vancouver... what an evening of magic and good times... they are the loveliest couple, the kind of people who host amazing parties which you remember long after the last wine bottle has been emptied (or beer bong decimated), and both are so beautiful, generous and good.

For their wedding, my gift was the gift of cakes... delightfully delicious vegan cupcakes! Dark chocolate ganache topped vanilla cupcakes, and peanut butter frosting topped dark chocolate cupcakes! Reese's peanut butter candies used to be Sharon's favourite before she was vegan -- so I tried my best to emulate the flavours of those candies in my peanut butter cupcakes!

It was such a beautiful night--flowers everywhere, a huge spread of yummy food, gorgeous handcrafted scalloped banners made of vintage pillow cases and fabric, and the cutest couple in the middle of it all, celebrating ten years of marriage. Sharon and Cam never had a big wedding back when they tied the knot - they got married at Jack Chow Insurance in Chinatown, Vancouver with just their two witnesses as guests. So now they got to experience the full blown wedding, with so many loved ones and good friends by their side!

Congrats Sharon and Cam!! xoxo
